"I mean, anyone comes
alongside a Humvee, we're dead. Anybody even looks at you funny,
we're dead. Pretty much the bottom line is, if you're in Iraq,
you're dead." – Spc. Owen Eldridge
Why watch this? For
a brutal dose of reality regarding the War in Iraq.
Plot Summary:
The film follows an adrenaline-addicted bomb disposal expert who
is transferred to a new squad during the Iraq War, causing a
rift with his more cautious teammates. His reckless, maverick
approach to defusing improvised explosive devices constantly
puts the entire unit in danger. As the squad deals with the
immense pressure and stress of their work, they must confront
their differing attitudes toward duty and survival with every
mission.
Dad's Preview:
This harrowing account of a Bomb Disposal unit in Iraq is
perhaps the best film regarding that conflict. Director Bigelow
brings forth a very gritty, tense story about men on the edge,
each exhausted and desperately trying to find a way to cope with
the rigors of combat in a hostile land. This film really
elevated Jeremy Renner's career and his performance, as a
conflicted soldier who thrives in extremely dangerous
situations. Seriously, there is nothing more suspenseful than
defusing anti-personnel explosives made with old bombs and
homemade detonation devices. This film is intense.
